How to assess a vacancy before applying

A job advertisement is useful only when its details are clear enough to support a sensible decision. Read the full description rather than relying on a short search result. Confirm the employer name, job title, work location, employment type, required qualifications, expected experience, application method and closing date. If a listing is posted on an aggregator, follow the link to the employer's own careers page and check that the role is still open.

Compare essential requirements separately from preferred qualifications. If an employer asks for a mandatory licence, language level, registration or right to work, do not assume that an unrelated qualification will replace it. If the wording is unclear, ask the employer or recruiter a specific question before sharing sensitive documents.

Use a vacancy-to-CV checklist

  1. Highlight the main responsibilities and the three to five most important skills.
  2. Choose real examples that show those skills. Use numbers only when you can substantiate them.
  3. Move the most relevant experience and training higher on the CV.
  4. Write a short cover letter explaining why this particular role fits.
  5. Check the application format, file names, recipient and deadline.
  6. Save a copy of the advert and the submitted documents so you can prepare for an interview.

Career resources by application stage

Exploring: use job titles and related titles to understand the market. Preparing: update your CV and gather certificates or portfolio examples. Applying: tailor the application and follow the employer's stated method. Interviewing: prepare concise examples of problems you solved, decisions you made and how you worked with others. Following up: keep a simple record of application date, contact person, status and next action.

Use the downloadable templates as starting points, not as finished legal or financial documents. Check local hiring conventions and the requirements of the employer. For office workflows, the Excel templates can help organize orders, stock, invoices and business figures; they are designed to be edited and reviewed before use.
