Time zones make it possible to describe local time consistently around the world. Comparing two locations is more reliable when you use a named time zone such as Europe/London or America/New_York rather than assuming a fixed offset from UTC throughout the year.
UTC and local time
UTC is the reference used for coordinating time globally. Local time zones are represented by their relationship to UTC, but many locations change their offset during part of the year because of daylight-saving rules.
Why named zones are better than fixed offsets
A fixed offset such as UTC+1 does not capture future daylight-saving changes. A named zone contains rules that allow software to determine the appropriate local offset for a particular date.
Example: scheduling a meeting
If someone in Europe schedules a meeting with a colleague in North America, both people should agree on the date and local times or use a shared UTC time. Checking the exact date matters because the two locations may switch daylight-saving time on different dates.
Travel and remote work
Time-zone conversion is useful for flight planning, remote teams, online events and customer support. Always check the final calendar invitation or booking confirmation because organizations may display times in the viewer's local zone.
