A savings projection combines a starting balance with regular contributions and an assumed interest rate. It can help illustrate how consistent deposits may accumulate over time. The calculation is mathematical, so the output depends entirely on the assumptions entered.

Starting balance and regular contributions

A starting balance gives the projection an initial amount. Monthly contributions then add to the balance over the selected number of years. If there is no interest, the future value is simply the starting amount plus all contributions.

Why time matters

With compounding, earlier money has more time to earn subsequent growth. This means that changing the number of years can have a significant effect on the projection even when the contribution amount stays the same.

Use realistic assumptions

An advertised interest rate may not remain constant. Accounts can also have fees, taxes, withdrawal restrictions or different compounding schedules. Use a conservative assumption for planning and compare the projection with the actual account terms.

Check the result before using it

A calculator is most useful when the inputs match the question you are trying to answer. Check units, dates, rates, periods and rounding before copying a result into a document or decision. For financial calculations, compare the estimate with the actual terms supplied by a lender, employer, bank or other provider.
