Salary Calculator Guide

Understand annual, monthly, weekly and hourly gross salary calculations and why gross pay differs from take-home pay.

Salary can be quoted annually, monthly, weekly or hourly. Converting between these figures is useful when comparing job offers, contracts or working arrangements. A simple gross salary calculation does not attempt to reproduce a country-specific payslip.

Annual to monthly

A simple annual-to-monthly estimate divides annual gross pay by 12. Weekly estimates divide annual pay by 52, while an hourly estimate can divide annual pay by the assumed number of working hours across the year.

Gross versus net

Gross salary is the amount before deductions. Take-home pay can be lower because of income tax, social insurance, pension contributions and other deductions. Benefits, bonuses and overtime may also change the actual payslip.

Compare like with like

When comparing offers, check the working hours, number of paid months, bonuses, benefits, overtime rules and holiday entitlement. Two offers with the same annual headline salary can have different practical value.

Check the result before using it

A calculator is most useful when the inputs match the question you are trying to answer. Check units, dates, rates, periods and rounding before copying a result into a document or decision. For financial calculations, compare the estimate with the actual terms supplied by a lender, employer, bank or other provider. For documents and images, keep the original file and inspect the processed copy before sharing it.
