Date differences are useful for project planning, subscription periods, travel schedules, deadlines and general date checks. The first question is what you mean by “difference”: calendar days between two dates or elapsed hours and minutes between timestamps.

Calendar days

For a simple date comparison, the calculation counts the distance between calendar dates. February, April, June and other months have different lengths, so manually multiplying months by 30 can produce an incorrect result.

Inclusive versus exclusive counting

Some forms and legal rules count both the start and end date, while a mathematical difference often measures the interval between them. If a deadline is important, follow the definition provided by the relevant organization rather than assuming one convention.

Business days are different

A basic date difference does not automatically know weekends, public holidays or a company’s working calendar. If you need a business-day deadline, use the applicable calendar and rules separately.

Check the result before using it

A calculator is most useful when the inputs match the question you are trying to answer. Check units, dates, rates, periods and rounding before copying a result into a document or decision. For financial calculations, compare the estimate with the actual terms supplied by a lender, employer, bank or other provider. For documents and images, keep the original file and inspect the processed copy before sharing it.
